Dental Caries

"Dental caries" is the demineralisation process of the tooth surface caused by bacteria and the acids that they produce as they digest sugar. The word "caries" is derived from the Latin word for "rot" or "rotten" and describes pretty well what tooth decay is. Dental caries leads to cavities and even tooth loss if not treated. Dental caries is the most common of all diseases, second only to the common cold in prevalence. Dental caries is of particular threat to children under 12 years of age, but are also widespread in adults.

The inside of your mouth is full of bacteria. The bacteria found there ferment dietary sugars in food to acids. When bacteria, acid, and food particles join together, they promote plaque formation. Plaque clings to your teeth and attacks the outermost layer of your tooth, the enamel. If dental caries are not taken care of, the tooth will eventually be lost or require extensive dental work. Proper dental hygiene - brushing teeth, using mouth wash, flossing, and chewing sugar-free gum - can dramatically reduce dental caries and keep your smile sparkling. Best of all, proper dental hygiene will keep you out of the dentist's hot seat.

Because the bacteria in our mouths are fuelled by the food we eat, it is important to watch our intake of sweets and sugary foods. There are, however, a number of sweeteners that help prevent cavities and reduce the acid production in your mouth. Xylitol, a natural sweetener found in many fruits and vegetables, tastes and looks like sugar but without the negative side effects.

Chewing gum that contains high levels of xylitol fights cavities and dental decay by creating an unwelcome environment for bacteria. Xylitol is one of bacteria's natural enemies - in a xylitol-rich environment, bacteria lose their ability to stick to teeth and are therefore unable to colonise and turn into plaque.

The makers of Spry Chewing Gum, Xlear Inc., offer a variety of dental products known as the Spry Dental Defense System, that will dramatically increase your oral health.

The Spry Dental Defense System includes:
